Michelle & Bryan | A Golden Hour Engagement Session at Island Beach State Park, NJ


September along the New Jersey coast is hard to beat. The beaches start to quiet down, the light gets a little softer, and everything seems to move at a slower pace. It's easily one of my favorite times of year to photograph couples, especially somewhere as beautiful as Island Beach State Park.


Last September, I met up with Michelle and Bryan for their engagement session at Island Beach State Park in Seaside Park, New Jersey. Between the sandy trails, rolling dunes, and golden evening light, we couldn't have asked for a better setting.


And for Bryan, this wasn't just another pretty beach. It was a place he already knew pretty well.


An Engagement Session with a Personal Connection


One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions is getting to know couples outside of the wedding-day excitement. There's no timeline to worry about, no guests waiting for you, and nowhere else you need to be. Just an opportunity to slow down, hang out, and capture a little bit of what makes your relationship yours.


For Michelle and Bryan, Island Beach State Park felt like a natural choice. Bryan had previously worked there as a lifeguard, so this stretch of the New Jersey coastline already held a personal connection for him.


I always love when couples choose locations that mean something to them. Beautiful scenery is great, but having a little history attached to a place makes the photographs that much more meaningful.


We started the session along the sandy paths winding through the dunes. Michelle and Bryan made my job pretty easy, spending most of the time laughing, walking hand in hand, and just enjoying being together.


Golden Hour in the Dunes at Island Beach State Park


If you've ever visited Island Beach State Park, you know it's a pretty special place. Unlike many of the busier beach towns along the coast, there's a wild, natural feeling to the landscape. Miles of sandy shoreline, tall dune grasses, winding beach paths, and plenty of room to explore.


It's exactly the kind of setting I love photographing in.


As the sun began to get lower, we wandered through the dunes, taking advantage of the warm September light. We kept things relaxed, mixing in a little direction here and there while leaving plenty of room for the natural moments to happen.


Some of my favorite photographs from this part of the session are the simplest ones: Michelle and Bryan walking barefoot through the sand, exchanging smiles, or leaning into each other as the sunlight filtered through the beach grass.


Nothing overly complicated. Just two people enjoying a beautiful evening together.


Barefoot on the Beach and Into the Ocean


As the evening went on, Michelle and Bryan changed into a second look, and we made our way toward the ocean. The light was getting softer, the beach was quiet, and we had that beautiful mix of warm sunset tones and cooler coastal colors. We spent some time along the shoreline before eventually making our way right into the water. And yes, they got a little wet.


Those are always some of my favorite moments during an engagement session. When couples stop thinking about being photographed and start enjoying themselves, the images take on a completely different feeling.


We finished with a few more portraits along the quiet park road, surrounded by the natural coastal landscape. It was a laid-back ending to an evening that felt completely true to Michelle and Bryan.


From Island Beach State Park to The Mill Lakeside Manor


Michelle and Bryan later celebrated their wedding at The Mill Lakeside Manor in Spring Lake, New Jersey. I love how their engagement session and wedding brought together two beautiful parts of coastal New Jersey...from the untouched dunes and oceanfront scenery of Island Beach State Park to the lakeside setting of The Mill, both locations have their own distinct character.


Their engagement session was a chance to document this season of their lives in a place that already meant something to them, before moving on to the next chapter together.

I especially love photographing here in September and October, when the summer crowds begin to thin out and the evening light is absolutely beautiful.

My approach to engagement photography is pretty simple: a little direction when you need it, plenty of room to be yourselves, and an emphasis on the moments that feel real.
