And sometimes, those are the ones that mean the most.
Mary and Kodie’s wedding at Pine Island Lodge in Corolla, North Carolina was already special before the day even began—because this wasn’t just a wedding I was photographing. Mary and Kodie are friends of mine, and my family and I were lucky enough to be included in their full week-long celebration in the Outer Banks.
From the very start, the week felt less like “work” and more like being welcomed into something genuinely meaningful.
A Week That Felt Like Family
Spending the week with Mary and Kodie, along with both of their families, set the tone for everything that followed. Meals together. Time on the beach. Kids running around. Conversations that had nothing to do with timelines or logistics.
Both families were incredibly kind, open, and inclusive—the type of people who make you feel like you belong almost instantly. That warmth carried straight into the wedding day and shaped how everything unfolded.
It wasn’t just a celebration. It felt like a gathering of people who genuinely enjoy one another.
A Calm Start in the Outer Banks
The wedding day began at Pine Island Lodge, surrounded by the quiet, natural beauty that makes this part of the Outer Banks so special. Low clouds rolled in, softening the light and slowing the pace.
Mary got ready with laughter filling the house—no rushing, no anxiety about the weather. And a big part of that calm came from having the right team in place. Smooth Sailing Weddings, led by Sasha, kept everything moving effortlessly behind the scenes, allowing everyone to stay present and enjoy the day as it unfolded.
That kind of ease doesn’t happen by accident.
Letting the Weather Be Part of the Story
When the rain arrived, the vendor team didn’t flinch. An entire village of people that had been formed through out the week helped to move an entire wedding underneath the venue's covered balconies and porches. It was truly amazing to watch everyone come together to keep a gorgeous day on the rails.
After the indoor ceremony, and after the rain had passed, we headed to the beach as planned, letting the mist and moody sky become part of the backdrop instead of something to avoid. The light was beautiful. The shoreline felt quiet and cinematic. And the two of them were completely at ease—walking in the sand, laughing, taking it all in. Some of my favorite images from the entire week came from these moments. A reminder that perfect conditions aren’t required when the connection is real.
A Ceremony That Felt Honest
Their ceremony was simple, heartfelt, and grounded in what mattered most: family, commitment, and shared history. With loved ones gathered close and the ocean nearby, everything felt intimate and real.
There was no sense of performance—just presence.
Coastal Design That Felt Natural and Intentional
On the dinner tables and all around the Pine Island Lodge, the space was transformed in a way that felt elevated without ever feeling overdone. Kelsey from Creamery Hill created a design that leaned into natural textures, soft tones, and coastal warmth with a tropical flair—perfectly matching the relaxed Outer Banks setting.
Everything felt intentional, cohesive, and true to Mary and Kodie’s vision.
From Laid-Back to Full-On Celebration
Once the reception kicked off, the energy shifted fast—in the best possible way.
The dance floor filled almost immediately, thanks to OBX Party Band, who kept the party going all night long. Shoes came off, generations mixed, and the celebration under the tent went full throttle. It was the kind of party where no one checks the time and no one wants the night to end.
Ending the Night the Only Way That Made Sense
As the night wound down, Mary and Kodie set the tone one last time—by jumping into the pool fully dressed. And without hesitation, everyone followed. Ties loosened, shoes came off (or didn't) and suddenly the entire celebration was splashing, laughing, and soaking wet. It was spontaneous, chaotic, and completely on brand for the kind of day they created. A perfect ending to a wedding that was never about keeping things pristine, but about celebrating fully, together, and without holding back.
Why This Day Meant So Much to Me
Photographing weddings for friends is always different. There’s a deeper layer of trust and a greater responsibility to tell the story honestly.
Mary and Kodie didn’t just invite me to document their wedding—they welcomed my family and me into their lives for an entire week. That generosity, combined with how thoughtful and inclusive both of their families were, made this wedding incredibly meaningful to photograph.
